I get PostScript errors (such as -8133) and virtual memory (VM) errors when I try to print my documents. What can I do?
Many errors are caused by insufficient memory in the RIP (raster image processor) of the printer. Typical error messages include: "Limitcheck," "VMerror," "The document is okay but cannot be printed," "Please use the Chooser to select a printer," and "-8133." While the ideal solution is to add more memory, you can choose certain options to increase the amount of memory available in your printer.
1. With a QuarkXPress document open, choose Page Setup from the File menu.
2. The numbers visible just to the left of the OK button in the Page Setup dialog box indicate the version of Laser Prep you are using. You should be using version 6.0 or higher. If you are not, install it now. To do so:
A. Quit QuarkXPress.
B. Insert the Macintosh Printing Tools disk (it must be from System 6.0.5 or 6.0.7) into an available disk drive.
C. Double-click on the "Apple Color" folder to display its contents.
D. Drag both the "Laser Prep" file and the "Laserwriter" driver file to your System folder.
E. If you print under MultiFinder, drag the "Print Monitor 1.3" file to your System folder as well.
F. Launch QuarkXPress; open your document; and choose Page Setup from the File menu.
3. Uncheck all four printer effects: Font Substitution, Text Smoothing, Graphics Smoothing, and Faster Bitmap Printing.
4. Click Options.
5. Check Unlimited Downloadable Fonts.
6. Click OK to close the Options dialog box; then click OK to close the Page Setup dialog box.
7. Attempt to print the file again.
8. If you are unsuccessful, reimport any graphics and attempt to print again.
9. If you are still unsuccessful, attempt to print the document in rough (Output) mode by clicking the Rough button in the Print dialog box (File->Print); graphics are not printed. If the document prints in Rough mode, the problem is related to the graphic.
10. If you are still unsuccessful, consult technical support for the illustration program or Quark Technical Support for tips to reduce the complexity of graphics.
